Scene 04 · Venues

A chauffeur's guide to Manhattan's houses.

What time to arrive, how each house handles latecomers, and where the car actually drops off. The same facts the timing planner runs on — here as a reference you can read end to end.

Act I · Broadway theaters

The Theater District

Broadway houses bag-check at the doors and hold latecomers until a scene break. Plan to be dropped about 30 minutes before curtain — and remember Broadway itself is closed to cars at Times Square, so the drop is always a side street.

Majestic Theatre

Theater

245 W 44th St · arrive ~30 min before curtain.

Drop: W 44th between Broadway and 8th Ave, approaching from 8th Ave.

St. James Theatre

Drop: W 44th between Broadway and 8th Ave, from 8th Ave.

Minskoff Theatre

200 W 45th St · arrive ~35 min — family shows seat heavy.

Drop: Broadway at W 45th (One Astor Plaza), from 7th Ave southbound.

Richard Rodgers

Drop: W 51st between Broadway and 8th Ave, from 8th Ave northbound.

Act II · Opera & concert halls

Lincoln Center to 57th Street

These houses are the strictest about latecomers — the Met Opera seats none until intermission — so the lead times run longer. Lincoln Center and the Beacon sit above 60th Street, outside the congestion zone; Carnegie and Radio City are inside it.

Metropolitan Opera

Opera

Lincoln Center · house opens 45 min early; no late seating until intermission.

Drop: Lincoln Center plaza, Columbus Ave at W 63rd–64th.

David Geffen Hall

Concert

NY Phil · suggested arrival 30 min; seated only at a break.

Drop: Lincoln Center plaza, Columbus Ave at W 65th.

Carnegie Hall

Concert

881 7th Ave · seating opens up to 45 min before; bags screened.

Drop: 7th Ave at W 57th, or just off on W 56th/57th.

Radio City Music Hall

Concert

1260 6th Ave · doors ~1 hr before; airport-style screening, 6,000 seats.

Drop: 6th Ave at W 50th, or W 51st; expect crowds.

Beacon Theatre

Concert

2124 Broadway (UWS) · doors ~1 hr; metal-detector screening.

Drop: Broadway at W 74th–75th, or off on Amsterdam Ave.

Act III · The arena

Madison Square Garden

Madison Square Garden

Arena

4 Penn Plaza · doors 60–90 min before; walk-through detectors and bag screening.

Drop: 7th or 8th Ave near W 31st–33rd; the Garden sits over Penn Station, so crowds are heavy.

Act IV · Dinner reservations

Pre-theater dining rooms

A reservation only needs you ten minutes early — the timing trick is the other end. For an 8 PM curtain, book dinner around 6, tell the captain you have a show, and hold the car for the short hop.

Le Bernardin

Dinner

155 W 51st St · arrive ~10 min early; a true pre-theater seating.

Drop: W 51st between 6th and 7th Ave.

The Modern

Dinner

9 W 53rd St · arrive ~10 min early; behind MoMA.

Drop: W 53rd between 5th and 6th Ave, at the museum entrance.

Eleven Madison Park

Dinner

11 Madison Ave · a tasting-menu evening — not a pre-curtain option.

Drop: Madison Ave at E 24th, facing the park.

Act V · Galas & black-tie

The gala houses

Arrive within the first 15–20 minutes of the call time, for the receiving line and cocktails — and for a curb that is managed by the venue's team on event nights, where your chauffeur stages the pull-in.

Cipriani 42nd Street

Gala

110 E 42nd St · arrive in the opening window.

Drop: E 42nd between Park and Lexington, opposite Grand Central.

The Plaza

Gala

768 5th Ave · ballroom entrance off Grand Army Plaza.

Drop: W 58th / 5th Ave entrance at Grand Army Plaza.

The Pierre

Gala

2 E 61st St · arrive in the opening window for the receiving line.

Drop: 5th Ave entrance at E 61st.

Am. Museum of Natural History

Gala

Central Park West at W 79th · entry timed to the call.

Drop: Central Park West at W 79th, or the W 81st entrance.

The Met (Fifth Avenue)

Gala

1000 5th Ave · grand-staircase entrance handles arrivals in waves.

Drop: 5th Ave steps at E 82nd; curb managed on event nights.

Timing any of these? The venue planner turns any venue and showtime into a door time and a running order in a few seconds — then call the box office to put a chauffeur on it.
